Prenatal Massage is a relaxing and therapeutic form of massage therapy which incorporates many of the other techniques associated with deep tissue massage, with the difference of using a proper cushioning for optimal support. At Be Well, we use a 2 cushion system which allows the expectant mother to lie safely on the table face down for half the session (most find it incredibly comfortable, and it provides wonderful back relief). Once she moves to her back, she is fully supported with a 45 degree back wedge and knee support. For those expecting multiples, we will move to the side-lying position once it becomes necessary. It’s important to seek a certified massage therapist for prenatal massage, and our therapists at Be Well Boston who provide prenatal massage have completed a comprehensive certification program.

Prenatal Massage can also have the following benefits:

  • Reduces muscular pain and strain from changes occurring in the body

  • Reduces the negative effects of changes to the circulatory system, including edema, varicose veins, and changes in blood pressure

  • Promotes relaxation, and helps with transitions through emotional support and physical nurturing

Postnatal Massage is also offered as a means to support a postnatal body. Many of our prenatal clients find it incredibly helpful to return for one or more sessions to help unwind any tension from labor and delivery, as well as postpartum aches and pains. It can also be very therapeutic to talk through your labor and delivery process if you so feel inclined, and Katrina has many years of experience in this realm, both from her own labor and delivery, as well as many years of treating pre and postnatal clients. We also use breast support and padding as necessary, so don’t worry about any discomfort or leaks, we got you! We don’t have an official cut-off for postnatal massage, but coming within the first 1-12 months is ideal.
